And how you too could pick your own
James Bond always been particular about his drinks, just like he is about his clothing, his cars and his women. This was part of what makes him James Bond. He walks with confidence, swagger and style everywhere he goes and even his drink are crafted in the same vein. In Casino Royale, he actually explains why he uses Vodka made from grain as he felt it makes the drink better tasting. So, he had a reason for every ingredient he uses.
James Bond’s most famous quote could easily be “shaken and not stirred” from the Dr. No in 1958 and many subsequent movies thereafter. Of course, he was talking about his drink and how he preferred it to be prepared. This is HIS SIGNATURE DRINK, a drink that he would be associated with for the rest of his life … even if he orders something else, his signature drink always is the Vesper Martini.
The James Bond Vesper Martini
- 3 Measures of Gordon’s Gin
- 1 Measure of Vodka
- ½ Measure Kina Lillet (Lillet Blanc)
- Large, Thin Lemon Peel Slice
How To Prepare
Pour the Gin, the Vodka and Kina Lillet over ice and shake very well until ice cold. Afterward, add the lemon peel slice for appearance.
** And whatever you do, make sure you shake it .
Another Man Of Style And Substance: Don Draper
Don Draper of Mad Men is another man of extreme style and substance. He is revered by his peers and has a swagger about him that most men desire. Even he has his own signature drink which is conveniently referred to as the “Old Fashioned”. Some would call his look “old fashioned”, but make no mistake about it, there is a certain level of style, sophistication, swagger and respect that this look garners. James Bond created it and Don Draper emulates it perfectly.
The Don Draper Old Fashioned Recipe
- 1 Dashes Angostura Bitters
- 1 Tsp Sugar
- 1 Orange Wheel
- 1 Maraschino Cheery
- 1 Splash Club Soda
- 2 Oz. Bourbon
- 1 Cherry
How To Prepare
In an old fashion glass, mix the bitters, the sugar, the orange wheel, the cherry and the club soda. Remove the orange rid and add the bourbon. Finish off by filling with ice for a cool, strong drink of pure style.
Don Draper sticks with the bolder choice of a Bourbon over a Vodka; does this make him better than James Bond? Surely not, as James Bond could easily hold his own against Don Draper. Even so, both of these men have their own style and their own swagger. Each is perfect in their environment and that is exactly what you need to be too.
Be Perfect In Your Environment
Now, it is time for you to create your signature drink. The first thing you want to know is that you are going to avoid beers and lagers and stick with Vodka’s, Gin’s, Whiskey’s and Bourbons. A man will not be revered by his choice of Corona and Bud Light.
Vodka’s and Gin’s are great for those who like lighter flavours that work great with bright flavours. Whiskey’s and Bourbons are more of the “man’s man” drinks as they are harder to take down alone. The first choice you need to make is what type of alcohol you want to use.
The next factor is determining whether you want it chilled or served warm. Some drinks really do not taste great warm such as Whiskey’s so you may want to make sure it served with ice.
Another factor is what will you add to your drink in order to make it yours. You can consult with a bartender to determine what will work great with your preferred alcohol. Once you have a good idea, you can start experimenting and replacing ingredients until you find a drink that makes your taste buds jump.
Then, after you have created your signature drink, learn it without stuttering. Both James Bond and Don Draper can order their drinks anywhere they are and they rattle of the recipe with swagger. The way you present yourself when crafting you drink is of utmost importance; stumble and everyone will look away … rattle it off cleanly as if you own it and the crowd will be yours.
A signature drink is a drink that everyone knows is yours. Not only that, but most people won’t even order the same drink as you as they know it can be seen as a sign of disrespect. That’s how much a signature drink can mean. If you want respect, even at the bar, design a signature drink perfect for you … perfect for ending the day right. James Bond and Don Draper are known for their signature drinks, will you be known for yours?
